A letter from the founder
On umami & autumn
The sudden arrival of darkening afternoons has speedily been followed by a quick succession of new daily habits. Each of them solely related, in my case, to wardrobe and appetite: swapping my homely birkenstocks for warm socks; putting the BBQ in the shed and pulling out the slow cooker; contemplating if I should still be adding cucumbers to our shopping list etc etc.
To herald in cold weather vibes, we’re super chuffed to have landed the Gingerbread hot chocolate, Pumpkin latte and the Miso pear caramel in all our restaurants. Spice mixes are from the wonderful Chai by Mira; pumpkin puree and espresso are the killer ingredients of the pumpkin latte; and the poached lemon-thyme conference pears are doused in a white miso caramel sauce – packing most flavour types: sweet, salty, umami and a hint of lemon zesty bitterness. In a few weeks, you will also see our first ever pumpkin-pecan-pie Dutch baby – a prelude to Thanksgiving.
On a side note, we’ve been mulling over our menu – which dishes can we confidently call classics and which ones may have run their course? Whilst plotting away at this, we always welcome your input, so never hesitate to email me with your “pancake” thoughts on patricia@wherethepancakesare.com
Last but not least, for parents and grandparents amongst our readers, we’ve listened to your feedback and have made the “build-your-own” children’s pancakes much more versatile with menus starting at £5 including a drink.
Tried making my own version of the miso caramel at home today – turned out great but I’ll need to stop by to try your pear version. Sounds awesome!
