Letter from the founder: on pancake day
Dear pancake friends,
Ever since our first pancake pop-up on Shrove Tuesday 10 years ago (for anyone who remembers, that was February 15th 2015, and it was even colder than it is today – same blue skies though!), Valentine’s Day marks the moment we go into batter overdrive, double our kitchen teams and get ready for that single one day that EVERY BRITISH PERSON has pancakes on their mind.
Shrove Tuesday is the day before Lent, when Christians traditionally abstain from meat, eggs, and dairy. Christian tradition says to use up rich foods before the fasting season starts and ask forgiveness for your sins. Other countries celebrate this day somewhat harder and faster, Carnaval. Either way, it’s a very happy day. Each year we’ve seen people come from far and wide in spite of rain, hail and freezing temperatures (oh, and transport strikes in 2021!), queuing merrily with family and friends, or making new friends in the queue – especially when sharing an umbrella (yes, we do have plenty of those on hand). In return, all of us at Where The Pancakes Are truly deeply share the joy of this simple and wonderful celebration.
So, we’re getting ready, with just over two weeks to go.
With our longtime friends St. Ewe’s Free Range Eggs, the family-run egg suppliers nestled in the rolling hills near Truro, Cornwall, we’re using the Shrove Tuesday 2025 opportunity to shout about our shared love for great food, nutrition and British farming. For one week, we’ll be serving the CFC (cornflake fried chicken topped with a fried egg and much more) and we’ll be making a fuss about the important work of the Farmers Community Network,a voluntary organisation and charity that supports farmers, farming families and people in rural communities through difficult times and periods of change.
On March 4th, our restaurants will be open from 7am – 10pm. Expect queue giveaways, roll-the-dice games with plenty of prizes and free pancakes for the first 25 guests to each our restaurants.
With warmth and love
Patricia
