Bringing our pancakes to London

We started our journey of pancakes in London on Shrove Tuesday 2015 with a pop-up on the Regents Canal in Hackney. We were armed with heaps of belief but our griddles were way too small to feed the many people who came from far and wide. It was a brilliant start and we are immensely proud to have been bringing people together around pancakes ever since.

I’m often asked what lead me to starting Where The Pancakes Are. Nothing is a simple dotted line of course, but this is pretty much the short answer:

I was raised in The Netherlands by loving parents. My dad spent hours  every Saturday cooking delicious non-ordinary meals. My mother was a fishmonger. Fresh, healthy eating was always centre-stage and weekly deliveries of fish made it on our plates most days.

The soaring highlight of my childhood was our regular family outing to a local pancake restaurant. It was a dark, buzzing place where the passionate owner cooked with multiple pans. He would bake large, steaming hot Dutch pancakes with aged gouda and bacon or apples and raisins. People from miles away would travel there for a meal and a cold glass of lager. It’s still around today and as busy as ever.

The comfort and connection of pancakes

Years later, carving out a career in California, I discovered a different sort of pancake. In those days, after endless days and nights of work, there was nothing more reassuring than the quiet booth, the plate stacked with warming pancakes and the waitress refilling my mug of coffee.

I met my husband, London became my home and the UK the country I love, we started a family. At the school gates my heart would sink to find parents divided by whatever difference there was between them whilst our children made no distinctions between themselves at all. I started cooking clubs as a way to bring people together, making jams, samosas, cannelloni and even Christmas dinner. Food became the bond that changed our relationships. And the experience changed me.

After visiting a fading pancake restaurant on the Kings Road, I made a decision. Connecting food and people would be my future and pancakes would be the vehicle to take me there.

No one should miss out on pancakes

I began to experiment with different flours and tested every pancake variety possible. My goal was to pioneer better pancakes. I wanted to accommodate new flavours, allergies and dietary needs so that everyone could join in. When my stand at the local school fair grew an enormous queue around the block, I realised I was onto something special.

We opened Where The Pancakes Are in 2016 and I have a lifetime of food memories, people and the cultural melting pot of London to thank for it.

I’ve heard a lot about their delicious pancakes, and I must say, they lived up to the hype. I ordered the small royal pancake, which was a savory dish that has an egg and salmon. I added extra maple syrup, and it was absolutely phenomenal, it elevated the entire meal to a new level. I’ve never had such a good maple syrup before. They even sell it in the shop! I’m definitely going to try the rest of their menu. Svetlana was incredibly lovely and helpful. She made our experience truly memorable. ❤️

Absolutely delightful. Very lovely pancakes with generous toppings. I got a "Dutch baby" which was a large Yorkshire pudding style pancake served in a pan. Amazing. Coffee also very nice.

Super leckeres kleines Pancakes-Restaurant. Extrem netter Service!
Wir sind um die Mittagszeit spontan zum Brunchen und wurden sehr freundlich empfangen. Wir hatten zweimal die vegetarische Version des English Breakfast, Avocadotoast mit pochiertem Ei , Pancakes mit Sahne und Früchten und das Summer Special mit Erdbeeren und Pistazien. Als Getränke Americano, Limonade und 2 Säfte. Es gibt eine separate Kids Karte mit pancakes zum selber Zusammenstellen. Wasser steht zur freien Verfügung auf den Tischen. Uns wurde auch ein Uno-Spiel für die Kinder gebracht, super nett. Der Service war sehr aufmerksam aber nicht aufdringlich.
Gerne beim nächsten London Besuch wieder ☺️

Had a lovely afternoon as I took my daughter out for her 17th birthday brunch. We all enjoyed our pancake choices. Service was amazing, and they even offered a free drink for the birthday girl. 🥰 Then, just before we left, they gave a small birthday gift bag with pancake mix and a recipe/tips inside. BEST PANCAKES I HAVE HAD IN A WHILE. I got the Simple with Streaky Bacon added. Pancake is fluffy and cooked to perfection. Butter is slightly salty which added a nice twist. Maple syrup wasnt too sweet. Cant complain about Bacon!

I also got the Iced Strawberry Matcha - highly recommend. Most cafes skimp out on matcha but they dont here. And strawberry is fresh, not syrup. Definitely smooth and nice balance between matcha and strawberry - it wasnt too sweet (still sweet, dont get me wrong), which was perfect for me.
